energy management module for OEM’s

Description

Simple integration: The ECU-LV is available in a handy module format that can be easily integrated into appliances or other electrical equipment by OEM’s. The module draws DC power from the equipment’s power circuit with no significant load burden. The module is paired with an external sensor coil that has to be installed around the power supply wiring inside the equipment. The module has a low voltage relay on board, which can operate an existing low voltage switch in the equipment such as a thermostat relay to shut off the power based on energy management requirements. This module is ideal for providing energy management capability in air conditioners and water heaters. The module can easily be installed inside the equipment housing and requires no additional electrical wiring.

The ECU-LV is designed to be installed in parallel to a load with no electrical connectivity wherein the high amperage, high voltage load does not run through the module. It is powered directly by the DC power supply for the equipment’s control hardware. The module consists of a printed circuit board based monitoring, analysis and communication system. The module has connectors where low voltage cables are attached to feed signals from the external coil to take measurements from the power supply wiring. There are also connectors to feed a low voltage signal to the external, existing relay for load management. The unit has an on-board FCC compliant radio for wireless communication.

Overview
Overview
The module uses an external current transformer (CT1) to detect and monitor the electricity in the power cable. The on board TARAS digital energy metering card (pat. 7555365) is able to translate the readings from the CT coils into values for power (Watts), frequency, voltage & current. This data is then relayed using RF wireless frequency of 2.4GHz to a remote Energy Gateway processor in an EMP or a Control Server that uses the system software to provide analysis and communication to execute decisions to turn loads on and off. There is one on-board, low-voltage relay, which has to be connected to an existing on/off relay in the equipment being controlled (for example a thermostat relay on an air conditioner) so that when it receives a low voltage signal to turn the load on and off it can trip the relay on the equipment. The ECU-LV, when integrated into a system such as e-LOK will help in understanding of the cost of operating electrical equipment/appliances in a building and help the user manage consumption and therefore save on energy costs.
