(ECU-15, ECU-20 & ECU-40) Energy Control Units for remote digital electrical metering and switching for Akida’s innGAUGE, wattGAUGE and e-LOK systems
Description
The ECU is designed to be installed “in-line”, to manage a single electrical load. It uses appropriately sized, UL rated cables to connect to the electrical supply and to the load. In its simplest form the cables have male and female plug ends to connect to a standard electrical outlet, allowing the plug for the load to be attached at the other end. The unit is housed in a UL rated plastic case and contains a printed circuit board based monitoring, analysis and communication system. The circuit board is powered by an on-board, UL listed transformer, which converts a very small portion of the 110V running through the unit into a 6V DC supply. Attached to the circuit board is a secondary panel that contains a (UL rated) relay that interrupts the electrical circuit running through the unit and powering the attached load. The relay is activated by a low-voltage signal from the circuit board to turn the controlled load on or off. The relay is available in a 15A, 20A and 40A rating and the cables are rated appropriately. Note that the high amperage, high voltage load does not run through the circuit board and is restricted to the external, appropriately rated wiring.
When the ECU is configured as a plug-in box with no cables it is called an e-PLUG. In this configuration it plugs into a standard electrical outlet with a 3-prong plug on one face. It has a female outlet on another face where a load can be plugged in. In the e-PLUG configuration it is only available with a 15A relay.
All ECU’s have on-board FCC compliant radios for wireless communication.
HOW THE ECU WORKS
- Overview
- The product uses an internal current transformer (CT) to detect and monitor the electricity in the power cable. The on board TARAS digital energy metering card (pat. 7555365) is able to translate the readings from the CT coil into values for power (Watts), frequency, voltage & current. This data is then relayed using RF wireless frequency of 2.4GHz to a remote Energy Gateway processor in an EMP or a Control Server that uses the system software to provide analysis and communication to execute decisions to turn loads on and off. The on-board, UL listed relay can receive a low voltage signal to turn the load on and off. The ECU, when integrated into a system such as innGAUGE will help in understanding of the cost of operating electrical equipment/appliances in a building and help the user manage consumption and therefore save on energy costs.
